Applicants must download and complete an application form and return it, alongside a current CV, by July 28, 2023.

ACU Routeledge/Round Table Commonwealth Studentships

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the ACU Routledge/Round Table Commonwealth Studentships 2023. These studentships, funded by The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs and the journal’s publisher, Routledge, in association with the ACU, provide support for research projects on Commonwealth-related themes.

Two Categories of Studentships

Each year, two studentships are available for study in the UK. The first is open to UK-registered students, and the second allows Commonwealth students from countries other than the UK to undertake a short study placement in the UK.

Research Focus and Grant Amount

The proposed research must either be related to the Commonwealth as a whole, involve a strong Commonwealth comparative aspect, or be relevant to a Commonwealth country other than the UK. A grant of £5,500 will be awarded to successful applicants, with £4,000 being paid at the announcement of the awards and the remaining £1,500 upon completion of the post-studentship requirements.

Eligibility Criteria

The first studentship is open to registered PhD students from UK universities, not necessarily UK citizens. The second is open to registered PhD students from ACU member universities in Commonwealth countries other than the UK, and to Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarship alumni who are PhD students at any Commonwealth university outside the UK.

Post-studentship Requirements

Successful applicants are required to submit an article between 4,000 and 6,000 words, based on their research, no more than twelve months after the take-up of the award. This article will be considered for publication in the Round Table journal. Successful applicants will also be required to make a podcast on their research for publication on the journal’s website.

Application Process

To apply for the studentships, prospective candidates should download the Routledge/Round Table Studentship Awards application form (https://www.acu.ac.uk/media/4929/rrt-studentships-application-form.docx), complete it, and return it to secretary@commonwealthroundtable.co.uk by 17:00 BST on Friday, 28th July 2023, along with a current CV.

Applicants are required to summarise their proposed research topic, intended outcomes, the likely impact of their research, and how the award would benefit their research. Additionally, applicants should provide the name of a proposed mentor and two referees.

Conclusion

This is an excellent opportunity for PhD students with a focus on the Commonwealth to receive funding and recognition for their research. For more information, visit the ACU’s official page.
