Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarships – In collaboration with the Sol Plaatje Educational Project, the Canon Collins Trust is currently accepting applications for postgraduate study in South Africa in 2023. They will give support for a master’s degree for up to a maximum of two years, and for a doctorate for up to three years. The continuation of financing is contingent on achieving good development and submitting adequate academic reports.
In 2023, they will only make awards to students studying in three areas:
- Justice, which includes Climate Justice, Law, Economics and Politics
- Education policy and practice
- Humanities, which includes Literature, History, Anthropology and the Arts

Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarships Eligibility
To be considered for a scholarship through this programme, you must first:
- be a citizen of, or a refugee in, one of the following countries: South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe
- be a regular resident of one of the aforementioned countries
- have a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division, or equivalent) or be about to graduate in the year of application
- be enrolled in or applying to a South African university
Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarships Value
- The scholarship package will be worth between R20,000 and R100,000 in 2023, depending on the student’s circumstances. They encourage both full-time and part-time Masters and PhD studies at South African universities, and they will consider applications from those who wish to study via distance learning.
- They also host an annual conference for current scholars as well as a number of smaller events throughout the year. Scholarship recipients are expected to participate in these activities as well as to join and contribute to our network.
How to Apply for Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Scholarships
Apply only if your programme of study falls under one of the disciplines listed above. Interdisciplinary courses and doctoral studies can be difficult to categorise at times. Applicants are encouraged to use their best judgement when deciding whether or not to apply. However, applications that clearly do not fall within these categories (for example, MBAs, medical sciences, sports sciences, and applied sciences) will be disqualified.
Climate justice will be a top priority in 2023. Climate Justice scholarship applications may be in a science or applied science field as long as they demonstrate relevance to climate justice issues.
