FG to Tackle Challenges Facing Education Sector, Says Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday said the Federal Government would comprehensively tackle challenges facing all sectors of the country’s education.
Jonathan said this at the combined 21st, 22nd and 23rd convocation of Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna.
“Our aim in government is to address comprehensively the challenges facing all sectors of education.
“We must move the focus from mere acquisition of certificates to the development and application of skills for which individual students are best suited,’’ he said.
He stressed the need for reorientation of our value system with increased emphasis on conduct, character and competence.
The president was represented by Dr John Mack, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education.
Jonathan enjoined educated elite in the society not to see people who did not have university degree as second class citizens.
“I set up a committee in April, headed by the Secretary to the Government of Federation, to look into the disparity between HND and Bachelors degree in the Public Service,’’ he said.
He urged members of the society to support people who could add value to themselves and the society by acquiring higher education.
He encouraged those who could excel in other areas to pursue their genuine interests and develop their skills.
Jonathan, however, called on Nigerians to be security conscious and report suspicious persons to security agencies, saying that “this war against terror can only be won if we work cooperatively.’’
“Innocent lives are being wasted by some people who have chosen to undermine our cohesiveness as a people, they will not succeed,’’ he said.
He advised youths in the country to shun political thuggery or acts capable of undermining free, fair and credible elections as the 2015 general elections are fast approaching.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Musbau Akanji, said the institution was graduating 7, 482 students for three academic sessions of 2010/2011, 2011/2012 and 2012/13. (NAN)
