What Is the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program?

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program provides a broad look into the IMF’s essential work.

For three years, you will rotate across two different departments.

Assignments can involve fiscal, monetary, balance of payments issues, debt, or regional surveillance.

This is not an internship but a real economist role where your work directly supports the IMF’s mission.

Who Is Eligible to Join the IMF Economist Program?

Those selected should be comfortable travelling, and knowledge of languages other than English is a plus, though not mandatory.

How Does the Selection Process Work?

The selection process for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program is thorough and includes several steps.

If shortlisted, you will have an initial interview lasting 30 to 40 minutes.

In this stage, you will discuss your research paper and answer questions about economic topics related to the IMF’s work.

If you pass the initial interview, you will need to provide an updated university transcript, submit three academic references, and send a research paper or part of your dissertation.

The next step is an in-person panel interview with senior IMF economists and a Human Resources officer.

You will also need to complete a 40-minute online psychometric assessment and a 90-minute written exam.

The final decision is made by a committee of senior IMF staff after reviewing the performance in interviews, assessments, and your submitted research.
