The authorities of the Lagos State University (LASU) in Ojo on Thursday postponed the students union election till further notice.

Mr Lawal Hakeem, the Secretary, Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) of the University Students Union (LASUSU), disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said that the election was postponed to prevent perceived crisis among the students.

Hakeem said that a faction of LASU students had expressed their displeasure earlier in the day because of the authorities’ decision to investigate one of the candidates.

He said that the candidate was said to be having a pending disciplinary case.

“The Dean of Students Affairs disclosed that one of the contestants is having a disciplinary case with the university and so he is not fit to contest the election constitutionally.

“A faction of the students, who felt that it was an injustice on the part of the contestant and the students’ populace, however, expressed their agitations on the authorities’ decision,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the candidate is vying for the position of the president of the students union.

Hakeem said that the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, had advised the union and IEC to postpone the election due to the students’ reaction to prevent any disruption in the forthcoming examinations and academic calendar.

Hakeem said that the VC had promised to look into the matter and take appropriate actions before the election could be rescheduled.

“Meanwhile, the election is postponed till further notice until all the issues surrounding the candidate is resolved,” Hakeem said.(NAN)
