NANS Calls for Sack of Defence Minister Over ‘Ignoble Role’:
The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has called for the sack of the Minister of State for Defence, Musliu Obanikoro, over what they described as “his ignoble role” in the recently concluded bye-election of the Ilaje/Ese-odo Federal Constituency of Ondo.
The election was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The students, who staged a peaceful protest at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade in Akure, to demonstrate their anger over Mr. Obanikoro’s alleged conduct, said it is saddening that the minister would descend so low to frustrate electoral process
The NANS National Financial Secretary, Timileyin Ayenuro, urged President Goodluck Jonathan to sack Mr. Obanikoro, describing him as a disgrace to the nation’s democratic process.
“We are condemning the involvement of the Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro in the election. His action is undemocratic, barbaric and irresponsible,” Mr. Ayenuro said. “It is sad that a serving Minister of Defence who is supposed to conduct himself orderly involved himself in an election using soldiers to intimidate and harass voters.”
“Indeed, Obanikoro is a disgrace to our political system; in a sane clime people like this should be sacked immediately”.
Armed with placards with various inscriptions, the students described the failure of the electoral body to declare the winner of the election as illegal.
The students, who claimed that they were not sponsored by any political party, said they would have marched to the INEC office to vent their anger but they changed their decision because of Monday’s bomb blast in Nyanya, a suburb of Abuja.
INEC had declared the election inconclusive saying elections did not hold in some polling units. In the interim results released by the electoral body, the Labour Party candidate leads that of the Peoples Democratic Party by less than a thousand votes. (Premium Times)
