Textile Workers to Join NLC in Solidarity Industrial Action for ASUU

Textile workers say they're ready to support NLC and ASUU.

If the Federal Government fails to handle the crisis between it and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)., the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) would join the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to mobilise for a solidarity industrial action.

NUTGTWN officials criticised the government’s “no work, no pay” approach imposed on striking dons because the cause of the strike had not been addressed.

NUTGTWN called on the Federal Government to address the persisting crisis in the education sector in a statement issued by President John Adaji to congratulate Muslims on the occasion of Eid el-Kabir.

“We note that, despite the efforts of the NLC and trade unions in Nigeria’s university system to resolve this crisis, including convening high-powered stakeholders’ meetings,” he said, “the government has remained recalcitrant and insensitive to the plight of the lecturers and students by refusing to treat the matter seriously.” Even more concerning and provocative is the Federal Government’s recent pronouncement of a “no work, no pay” policy, which has resulted in the suspension of the salaries of striking university staff.”

As an NLC affiliate, Adaji stated, “we thus salute the relentless work and solidarity of NLC headed by Ayuba Wabba and other concerned citizens of the country in addressing the lingering situation in the education sector.”
