An Abuja based news magazine, Savannah Express has presented the “Leadership Award of Excellence” to the University of Ilorin in recognition of the institution’s recent ranking as the best University in Nigeria, 20th in Africa and 1,842nd in the world.

The news magazine, in conjunction with the Nigerian Renaissance Forum, Canada, presented the Award to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, in his office last Monday (September 1, 2014).

The Managing Editor of Savannah Express magazine, Mr. George Oraeki, said the award was informed by “the giant strides recorded by the University, which has practically brought the institution to the limelight.”

Mr. Oraeki said that the University had done the nation proud going by its uninterrupted academic calendar and the standard of education it offers students, adding that his news magazine and its sister organisation, the Nigerian Renaissance Forum, Canada, are spurred by this great feat of the University in making the award, which he described as “giving honour to whom it is due.”

The Managing Editor said that the groups were in the University to show solidarity and to spur the University to do more.

“We enjoin the Vice-Chancellor, the staff and students of the University to strive to become the number one university in Africa”, Mr. Oraeki said, adding that the award should be seen “as a jewel to bring more glory to the nation.”

In his response, Prof. Ambali expressed gratitude to God and to the two organisations for “recognising our little contribution to education in Africa” and promised that the award would encourage the University to do more. He noted that the success recorded by the University is a product of collective efforts by the entire members of staff of the University..

The Vice-Chancellor said, “We have a long way to go but we are making steady progress. We are not unmindful of the challenges ahead. My members of staff have promised to be more dedicated to ensure the University becomes the best in Africa.”

In his comment, a representative of the Nigerian Renaissance Forum, Canada, Mr. Ayodele Samuel, said that the Forum is peopled by Nigerians in the Diaspora, adding that the rising profile of the University of Ilorin is a thing of joy to every Nigerian anywhere in the world. He then urged the institution to sustain the tempo.
