Overview of Postgraduate Programmes at UNILORIN

UNILORIN Postgraduate School offers five primary types of postgraduate programmes:

Ph.D. Degree Programmes

These programmes are suited for holders of M.A.; M.Ed.; M.Eng.; M.Sc.; LL.M; and M.P.H. degrees, with durations spanning 18 to 48 months for full-time candidates and 36 to 72 months for part-time candidates. Prospective Ph.D. candidates must complete prescribed courses and submit a thesis to conclude their studies.

M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree Programmes

Eligibility for these programmes includes having a score between 55.00 to 59.99 percent or a CGPA of 3.50 to 3.99 on a 5-point scale. These are full-time programmes lasting 12 to 24 months. Candidates might convert to a Ph.D. programme after the first year, subject to satisfactory performance.

M.Phil. Degree Programmes

Candidates scoring between 50.00 and 54.99 percent or a CGPA of 3.00 to 3.49 are eligible. Offered solely on a full-time basis, these programmes require 18 to 24 months for completion, culminating in a dissertation.

Master Degree Programmes

These include various fields such as M.A.; M.Ed.; M.Eng.; M.Sc.; LL.M; and M.P.H., lasting 18 to 24 months for full-time and 36 to 48 months for part-time enrolment. Each programme involves coursework and a research report, ending with a dissertation.

Admission Requirements

General Entry Requirements:

  • Applicants must provide all required certificates at the time of purchasing the application form.
  • The National Youth Service Corp Discharge Certificate OR Exemption Certificate must be presented by July 30, 2024.

Application Submission:

  • Applications must be submitted online with scanned copies of credentials.
  • After online submission, all supporting documents and a hard copy of the application form should be sent to the Secretary, Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, by April 26, 2024.
  • Transcripts of Academic Records should be sent directly to the relevant department head. The Postgraduate School is not responsible for misdirected transcripts.

Qualifications for Admission:

  • All applicants should have at least 5 O/L Credit passes including English Language and Mathematics. Those with O/L results before 2015 may have a pass in one of these subjects, depending on the programme.
  • Master’s degree applicants need a minimum of Second Class Honours Degree (Lower Division) and must apply within their first degree field unless additional Senate requirements are met.
  • Ph.D. applicants should have a relevant Master’s degree with at least 60% average or 4.0 CGPA on a 5-point scale. They must also pass departmental interviews and assessments.

Specific Requirements for Foreign and International Applicants:

  • Higher Degree applicants from non-English speaking foreign universities must submit proof of English proficiency, such as TOEFL or IELTS scores.
  • International applicants are exempt from the qualifying examination and must submit a research proposal electronically by May 3, 2024.

Exemptions and Special Instructions:

  • Applicants from the University of Ilorin with First Class or Second Class Upper Division degrees may be exempt from the qualifying exam if applying within their undergraduate department.
  • Applicants for full-time programmes must submit a letter of release from their employers at registration.

Programme Specifics

Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science Requirements:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Hold a first degree in Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences, or Humanities from a recognized university.
    • Possess an HND in Computer Science or Engineering from recognized polytechnics, with at least a Lower Credit.
    • Have an HND in a field other than Computer Science or Engineering, preferably from Sciences or Social Sciences, with a Lower Credit from a recognized Polytechnic or equivalent institution and at least one year of relevant experience.

Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics Requirements:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Hold a minimum of an honour’s degree in any of the Science or Social Science disciplines from a recognized university.
    • Possess an HND in Statistics from a recognized polytechnic with a minimum of Lower Credit.

Master of Public Health (MPH) Requirements:

  • Applicants must:
    • Hold a first degree in one of the following fields: Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Nutrition & Dietetics, Veterinary Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science, Health Information Management, Public Health, or Microbiology.
    • Have at least two years of working experience in a health facility, ministry of health, UN agencies, or health-related government and non-governmental agencies.

Application Fees

The application fee is non-refundable and is set at N25,000 (Twenty-Five Thousand Naira) for applicants residing in Nigeria, and $200 for international applicants.
