LASU Gets New DVC Administration

LASU Gets New DVC Administration:

The Senate of the Lagos State University, Ojo, has elected Prof. Fidelis Njokanma as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the institution.

Mr. Kayode Sutton, Public Relation Officer of the institution, said in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos that Njokanma was elected on Tuesday.

According to Sutton, Njokanma polled 33 votes while his co-contestant, Prof. Olatunji Abanikannda of the Faculty of Science, scored 30 votes in the election.

He said that of the 139 members of the senate, 83 signed the attendance register, while 77 members took part in the election.

Sutton told the News Agency of Nigeria that 14 votes were declared void.

Njokanma was formerly the Dean, Faculty of Clinical Services and also a former Deputy Provost, Lagos State University College of Medicine.

The PRO said that the senate would determine the date of the inauguration ceremony.

NAN reports that the position of the DVC became vacant since Dec. 8, 2013 while the management announced the vacancy and called for applications from interested professors and Heads of Academic Unit on April 7.

NAN also reports that the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities of the institution had staged a peaceful protest on Tuesday before the election, raising some questions on the nomination process.

They said that the university senate had to approve the nominees before the election and claimed the procedure was not followed.

The Registrar of the institution, Mr. Lateef Animashaun, had, however, intervened and summoned a senate meeting to approve the nominees before the election was eventually held.
