This prestigious programme is designed to foster a highly qualified cadre of teachers and researchers in Economics specifically for the English-speaking West African subregion.

Programme Overview
This programme is part of a larger initiative designed to provide world-class training in economics by African universities for countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The PhD program, tenable at the University of Ibadan, includes compulsory and elective courses, comprehensive examinations, defense of a Ph.D. thesis proposal, and writing a Ph.D. dissertation under supervision.
Eligibility
This programme is open to all citizens of English-speaking West African countries affiliated with eligible organizations engaged in economics education, research, and economic policy management. Limited spaces are also available for applicants from other English-speaking countries across Africa. Eligible candidates can be from the public sector, private institutions, or be self-sponsored.
Financial Support
Two types of financial support are available to students in the program on a competitive basis:
- Scholarship: Applicants from eligible public sector organizations can apply for full or partial scholarships from the AERC.
- Ph.D. Thesis Research Grant 1: All students enrolled in the program can apply for this grant, based on the assessed quality and potential development impact of their approved thesis proposal.
Admission Criteria
Admission to the Collaborative Ph.D. Programme is competitive, with criteria including an honours degree and a Master’s degree in Economics from a recognized university. Eligible candidates may also be required to take a selection test and/or attend an oral examination conducted by the Department of Economics of the University of Ibadan.
How to Apply
Application forms must be accompanied by certified copies of academic certificates and transcripts, three letters of recommendation, a detailed CV, evidence of attachment or sponsorship, and a statement of research interest.
Non-Nigerian applicants should pay a fee of US$160.00 into the designated account details provided. Payment of the application fee is detailed on the university’s website.
Submission and Deadline
Completed application forms should be returned to the Postgraduate College, University of Ibadan, no later than July 21, 2023. Applicants can personally deliver or send the forms by courier to the Postgraduate College. The progress of applications will be communicated electronically to applicants’ email addresses.
